Tour Overview

Jordan is an ideal destination for a one-week adventure. Bursting with things to see and do this trip includes the best of what this magnificent country has to offer, visiting all the major sites of interest. We will have two full days to explore the so called 'rose-red city' of Petra and to take a guided visit around Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. There is time to 'float' in the salty waters of the Dead Sea and snorkel (optional) over the beautiful coral reefs of the Red Sea. We will also experience the fabulous scenery in the desert at Wadi Rum, where we take a 4WD excursion into the more remote regions and camp out like the Bedouin.

Highlights

  • Stroll through the ancient streets of Roman Jerash

  • Visit Mt Nebo, claimed to be Moses' burial site

  • Discover Petra's secrets, with two full days at the labyrinthine rose-red city

  • Experience Bedouin life at a desert camp in Wadi Rum

  • Float in the mystical Dead Sea

Day 1 : Start Amman
Location: Amman
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Hotel Khan Khediwe (or similar)

Arrive into Amman. If your booking includes flights, we will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the overnight hotel.

Day 2 : Visit Jerash And Take A City Tour Of Amman
Location: Amman, Jerash, Amman, Amman
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Hotel Khan Khediwe (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast

This morning we drive north to Jerash, known as Gerasa in ancient times. This

was one of the ten wealthy, self-governing cities of the Decapolis during

Roman times, and was famous throughout the Roman world for the luxury of its

lifestyle. Buried for centuries under blown sand, Jerash is the only city of

the Decapolis to have survived, with a dramatic oval forum, colonnaded main

streets which remarkably have the drains still intact, two theatres and the

impressive temple of Zeus. After a good look around we head back to Amman for

a city tour including the Citadel, the Roman Theatre and the old city.

Day 3 : Drive Down King's Highway To Petra Via Mt Nebo, Madaba And Kerak
Location: Amman, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Kerak, Wadi Musa
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Standard hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
Meals Included: Breakfast

Today is a long driving day down the King's Highway which takes us up and

down huge 'wadis' (valleys). There are several stops of interest en route

including Madaba, known as the city of the mosaics, Mt Nebo and Kerak, which

is a magnificent fortified town. Further south we reach the magnificent city

of Petra; Jordan's premier historic site and one of the world's most

outstanding ancient cities.

Day 4 : Two Days Exploring Petra Including Optional Hikes
Location: Wadi Musa, Wadi Musa
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Standard hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
Meals Included: Breakfast

Two days to explore Petra, the so called rose-red city, 'half as old as

time'. Petra was hidden for centuries until the Swiss explorer Burckhardt

made his great discovery in 1812. It was founded by the Nabateans, an Arab

tribe that arrived here in the 6th century BC. Building at Petra began in the

third century BC and continued through the Roman period, financed by taxes

levied on the desert caravans. Two features of Petra are unique: firstly, it

is a city made defensible by being built down a series of chasms, rather than

on a hilltop. Secondly, it is built directly into the rock - beautiful red

and yellow sandstone carved into the most impressive facades which glow in

the brilliant sunlight.

To enter Petra we must begin by walking down a narrow chasm, known as the

Siq, surrounded by high cliffs on either side. Unveiled at the end of the Siq

is El Khazneh, the Treasury. This is just the first breathtaking sight of a

remarkable day. Continuing to the centre of the city, we pass the houses and

tombs of the rich citizens and the remarkable scale of the site begins to

unveil itself.  A optional walk can then be done up 750 steps to El Deir,

the monastery, with its superb facade topped by a huge urn.

On the second day your guide will take you into the site for either a hike up

to the High Place of sacrifice or for free time to explore the city

further.  Only a few people attempt to visit the High Place as it can be

quite arduous and is not recommended for those who are unsure of their

fitness or are uncomfortable with heights. However, those who do make it to

the top are rewarded with wonderful views over parts of the site visited on

the previous day.

Day 5 : Two Days Exploring Petra Including Optional Hikes
Location: Wadi Musa
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast

On the second day your guide will take you into the site for either a hike up to the High Place of sacrifice or for free time to explore the city further. Only a few people attempt to visit the High Place as it can be quite arduous and is not recommended for those who are unsure of their fitness or are uncomfortable with heights. However, those who do make it to the top are rewarded with wonderful views over parts of the site visited on the previous day.

Day 6 : Drive To Wadi Rum Desert; 4Wd Excursion And Overnight In A Bedouin Camp.
Location: Wadi Rum, Wadi Rum
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Exodus private camp (permanent Bedouin camp)
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

This morning there is the option to take a guided tour through Little Petra

or you can relax at our hotel before we join the modern Desert Highway and

make our way south to Wadi Rum.  The purpose of Little Petra is not clear

however archaeologists believe it was probably a suburb of Petra where

visiting traders on the silk route may have stayed.  Today we enter the

natural world heritage site of Wadi Rum where dramatic sandstone mountains

rise from the sandy desert floor is where Lawrence of Arabia and Prince

Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the First World

War and also where sections of the 1962 epic film were shot.

After checking into our private Exodus camp our Bedouin hosts take us for

around a 2-hour 4x4 jeep trip to explore some of the highlights of the

protected area. We go to the main popular sights, have time to sample bedouin

tea and then watch the sunset from the vantage point of a rock formation.

From here we return to our camp where we enjoy Bedouin hospitality with a

traditional dinner called Zarb which is cooked underground.  After dinner we

learn about Bedouin culture and music through interacting with the family who

run the camp.

Day 7 : Morning In Wadi Rum; Drive To Aqaba; Relax By The Red Sea; Optional Snorkelling
Location: Wadi Rum, Aqaba
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Lacosta Hotel (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast

Leaving the Red sea behind we will head to the Dead sea which is one of the

most fascinating places on earth.  Free time to experience floating and

trying the dead sea mud then cooling off in the swimming pool.  This evening

there will be a group dinner to celebrate your time in Jordan and say your

farewells.

Day 8 : Drive From Aqaba To The Dead Sea And Enjoy A Float
Location: Aqaba, Dead Sea
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 9 : End Dead Sea
Location: Dead Sea
Meals Included: Breakfast

Food

All breakfasts and two dinners are included at the Wadi Rum camp and the Dead
Sea resort.
Whilst staying in hotels we usually eat in local restaurants and on some
occasions the leader will take those who wish to a restaurant for a 'mezze'
style meal. These allow fast service with a variety of good quality food for
the group and usually cost 10-15 JOD pp ( GBP £11-17, USD $14-21, CAN
$18-28). If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in
choice; however, mezze is almost always available in restaurants and is a
good, filling choice. There is also a good choice of seafood available when
at the Red Sea. While camping in Wadi Rum we enjoy a traditional meal called
Zarb which is cooked underground.  This consists of rice with a selection
including chicken, lamb and vegetables. Vegetables will be cooked separate to
the meat.

Accommodation

On this Jordan adventure, we stay in a range of accommodations: a three-star hotel in downtown Amman, a simple but well-located hotel in Petra, and an unforgettable stay in a rustic Bedouin camp in the desert. We end in style, relaxing in a five-star hotel by the Dead Sea.

Below are the accommodations typically used on this trip:

Amman: Hotel Khan Khediwe (nights 1 & 2)

In Amman, we usually stay at Khan Khediwe, a three-star hotel in the bustle of downtown Amman. It's ideally placed for our adventures, close to a market and within walking distance of the Roman amphitheatre and shopping areas.

Petra: Hotel in Wadi Musa (nights 3-5)

We spend three nights in Wadi Musa, the town adjacent to Petra. Demand for rooms near Petra is very high; over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The hotels are simple but well located. Some are within walking distance of the main entrance to the Red Rose City, others are no more than a 10-minute transfer away. Places we stay include Edom Hotel, Petra Plaza, Petra Palace, Amra Palace and La Maison among others.

Wadi Rum: Exodus Private Camp (night 6)

Used exclusively by our groups, this permanent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is a highlight for many travellers. We sleep in simple, traditional tents sheltered by rugged stone cliffs and enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bedouin hosts. In the evening, they serve us a zarb dinner, cooked underground in the traditional manner, while the rest of the night is typically spent around the campfire, chatting and sharing an unforgettable experience.

Aqaba: Lacosta Hotel (night 7)

In the heart of modern Aqaba, the four-star Lacosta Hotel is within easy reach of  shops, restaurants and the Red Sea. The rooms come with furniture and beds from the Middle East, while the hotel also has a gym and restaurant.

Dead Sea: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (night 8)

A standout stay for many is the Holiday Inn at the Dead Sea. Checking into this five-star property allows us to kick back and relax, perhaps in one of the many pools or with a float in the salty Dead Sea waters from the private beach. There’s also a free-to-use gym and a selection of excellent restaurants and bars.

Worth knowing

Demand for accommodation in Wadi Musa (Petra) is high; this can create problems with hot water and plumbing. In general, the accommodation is more basic compared to the rest of Jordan.

Single supplements are available for this trip but cannot be guaranteed at Wadi Rum. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.

A Week in Jordan

This was a fabulous, exciting and varied trip made

This was a fabulous, exciting and varied trip made even more memorable by our great guide. Jordan is the perfect place to visit for a week - not just the rose red city of Petra but also the desert expanses of Wadi Rum and the chance to spend a night in a Bedouin tent. We covered just about everything - the Roman ruins of Jerash, the mosaics of Madaba, the Crusader castle at Karak and at full two days in the lost city of Petra with plenty of free time to wander around. For me a major highlight was the Bedouin experience - dinner lounging on divans in a Bedouin camp followed by a jeep trip across the desert and a night sleeping under the stars in another Bedouin camp. Followed by decompressing in Aqaba - fab shopping here - and finally taking in the sights of Amman. The rest of the region may be turbulent but Jordan is perfectly safe and very quiet, so it’s an excellent time to go. There were stunningly few tourists in Petra.

Astounding and revelatory

When we told our friends and relatives we were goi

When we told our friends and relatives we were going to Jordan there were generally the sort of intakes of breath you hear from a car mechanic who is about to tell you you need a new engine. 'Isn't that a bit risky?' etc etc etc plus dodgy jokes about being chained to radiators and youtube executions. Well, if you're thinking about this trip then the first thing to do is scratch those worries from your mind. Jordan feels safe and stable. Everyone we met was fiercely proud of its independent moderate stance amidst the political and internecine chaos and strife that surrounds it. The population is literate, charming, welcoming and wryly humorous. Walking the streets of Amman is largely a hassle free experience - in comparison, say, with the in-your-face onslaught of somewhere like Marrakech. But right now the Jordanian tourist industry is suffering with people scared to go to the region, so Jordan desperately needs visitors - and all the more reason to go. Support their economy and get to see amazing sights which are hardly crowded at all. So, this trip. We've done five Exodus tours, and enjoyed all of them in different ways, but this is right up there with the very best. It's a tightly packed itinerary - at the golden centre of which is two and a half days in and around Petra. A lot of tours settle for a day or even just a few hours, but after the first gobsmacking day exploring the main Petra site itself, Exodus offer a day's hike around the High places surrounding the Petra gorge. This is a very special experience indeed - we saw only two other tourists during the whole high places hike! Although I'd read that Petra was spectacular, and I'm a bit of an old cynic, the place far exceeded expectations. No one can be disappointed by experiencing this extraordinary place. But there's more to Jordan than Petra - it's a week crammed with breathtaking landscapes, a rich and varied archaeological history, and accessible cuisine, and a night in a spectacular desert. Oh yes, and there's snorkelling in the Red Sea, and floating in the Dead Sea too. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this holiday to anyone.
