Tour Overview

Indigenous Kokoda Adventures is committed to providing trekkers with a safe, challenging trek in a remote part of the world. Our goal is for all trekkers to safely complete their journey, and also to learn about the people and culture of Papua New Guinea. Depending on timing and conditions, we also incorporate a ‘mystery experience’ at a ‘to be announced time and place’ for our trekkers. It will be designed to provide you with an opportunity to experience something special that will incorporate the PNG culture and will also add a special memory for you when you return home. The challenge created by rugged mountain terrain and fast flowing rivers are some highlights of the trek. The challenge of a difficult river crossing, while possibly intimidating in the moment, will forever be a source of personal accomplishment once completed. One of the greatest rewards however, is the shared struggle of the group for a common goal. The personal satisfaction of mastering the physical difficulties of completing The Kokoda Track is an experience you will never forget and never tire of retelling all who will listen. We speak the truth when we say you will not return home the same person.

Day 1 : Pre-Trek Arrival – Jackson’S International Airport, Port Moresby
Location: Port Moresby
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Holiday Inn and Suites
Meals Included: No Meals

At the airport, you will be met by an Indigenous Kokoda Adventures representative.

We will arrange for your transfer to the hotel where you and your fellow trekkers will spend the night before heading out in the early morning.

There will be a pre-trek gathering in the evening where you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow trekkers, the group leaders and have a group dinner together.

After the meal, you will be briefed about the trek and this is where we will gather and record your insurance information and other paperwork necessary for the trip.

After the briefing, you can head to bed and enjoy your hotel room and bed as the next few days may be a little less comfortable.

Day 2 : Port Moresby To Kokoda And Then To Deniki Campsite
Location: Kokoda Track, Deniki
Accommodation: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We take an early morning chartered flight to Kokoda where we will meet our porters and guides for our trip.

We then will set off from Kokoda to Deniki Campsite where along the way you will see monuments, memorials and also have a few minutes to visit the museum.

We now begin our climb over the infamous Owen Stanley Range. We continue on, heading for Deniki where the first battle after the Australian withdrawal from Kokoda took place.

Our first night is spent in Deniki.

Day 3 : Deniki - Alola Village
Location: Alola
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we continue on to Isurava Village.

We trek to Isurava Memorial which was opened by Sir Michael Somare and The Honourable John Howard, Prime Ministers of Papua New Guinea, on the 60th anniversary of the battle.

We trek to Alola Village, making sure to look back to admire the spectacular views of the Kokoda Valley.

Alola Village is our home for the night.

Day 4 : Alola Village - Templeton's Crossing
Location: Templetons Crossing
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we trek to Eora Creek.

This was the final obstacle in the Australian advance and the scene of one of the most dramatic situations during the withdrawal from Isurava.

The battle involved savage fighting and many bitter memories for those involved.

As we stop to give our legs some much-needed breaks from the steep ascents, enjoy the beautiful scenery and the views from tops of the ridges.

We continue our trek to the Templeton’s Crossing campsite where we stop for the night.

Day 5 : Templeton's Crossing Campsite - Efogi Village
Location: Efogi
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we depart the campsite and trek to the crossing area where the Australian soldiers fought a bloody campaign over a 17-day period in October of 1942.

The need for supplies was so great and the situation so desperate, that the Japanese defenders turned to cannibalism in order to survive.

We make the climb to Kokoda Gap and enjoy the spectacular views back down beyond the Kokoda Plateau, continuing the climb to Mt. Bellamy.

Mt. Bellamy is the highest point of the Track and makes a great backdrop for a group photo.

We now enter the moss forest and continue through to the Tovovo Lookout, with the views of Naduri, Efogi and Brigade Hill.

The trek continues down to Naduri Village where we continue through and follow the track down the steep path to Evoge Creek.

We climb up the other (very steep) side and journey on to Launumu Village. From Launumu Village, we trek down and cross Kavae Creek and walk on to Efogi Village.

Efogi Village is the largest village on the Kokoda Track with a museum, first aid post and a landing strip.

Here you will have some time to explore the village and meet some of the residents as Efogi Village is our stopping place for the night.

Day 6 : Efogi Village - Menari Village
Location: Menari
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we climb Brigade Hill. We visit the positions held by the 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions during the Battle of Brigade Hill.

We visit the former Australian gravesite and after that we follow the Track down the ridge to Vabiavi River and then make the climb up to the village of Menari.

Menari is a large village where we will spend some time wandering through.

Taking a swim (and perhaps a much-needed wash!) in a slow-moving river/creek is a definite highlight.

If we are lucky, the children might reward our trekking efforts with a sing-sing, a beautiful performance that you will likely remember for many years to come.

Day 7 : Menari Village - Naoro Village
Location: Naoro
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we climb to the crest of Ladavi Saddle to the Menari Gap.

We then follow the Track to the Naoro swamp area. We cross the Naoro River and continue through the swampy area to Naoro Village where we will be overnighting.

Day 8 : Naoro Village - Ioribaiwa
Location: Ioribaiwa
Accommodation: Village Hut
Accommodation Name: Village Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we climb the Maguli Range to the top at Mogolonumu then we follow the Track south.

From here, we will be able to see the Japanese defensive position with the weapons pits and communication trenches.

We follow the Track down to Ofi Creek and we now make the steep climb to Ioribaiwa Ridge and see where the Japanese were finally brought to a stop.

We make our way down to Ioribaiwa Village where we stop for the night.

Day 9 : Ioribaiwa - Goldie River
Location: Goldie River, Kokoda Track
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we walk down to Va’ule and climb Imita Ridge where our historian will help us envision the horrific desperation that must have been felt by the soldiers.

We descend to the area of the ‘golden staircase’ although with all the footsteps over the years, it is not as it used to be due to wear and tear.

We continue to trek down and continue through the abandoned village of Uberi to Goldie River.

Enjoy the sound of the flowing water during our stay here and while you sleep. This is the only night where we will stay in tents.

Goldie River is our stopping place for the night.

Day 10 : Goldie River - Owers Corner - Port Moresby
Location: Port Moresby
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast

Today is our last climb on the Track.

We make the final push from Goldie River to Owers’ Corner so make sure you are warmed up properly and mentally ready for the final push.

It is short but intense so enjoy the final physical exertion as it will be over before you know it.

At Owers’ Corner, our bus will be waiting and will take us back to Port Moresby.

On our way, we stop at the Bomana War Cemetery to pay our respects to all the fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice as part of the Kokoda Campaign.

Time permitting, we will also make a quick stop at a locally owned café to enjoy a cup of locally grown coffee for a quick refuel.

For those departing right after the trek, this will provide you with what might be your last opportunity to experience a local business that supports the local community.
