Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Accommodation: Hotel Gomassine or similar

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. Marrakech is a feast for the senses, a world of spice markets, Amazigh music, carpets, delectable foods, acrobats and perfumed gardens. You can arrive at any time today as there are no activities planned until your group meeting at 5 pm. If you have an arrival transfer booked, please look for a representative with an Intrepid Travel sign when you arrive at the airport. Your hotel is located just outside the city walls around the old medina. It is about a 30-minute walk to the main square, Djemaa el-Fna (or a short calesh/taxi ride). It's also near a lot of local shops and restaurants. Settle in and relax.

Day 2: Aroumd

Location: Aroumd

Accommodation: Dar Tajine or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner

Today's adventure begins with a drive over the impressive High Atlas Mountains to the village of Imlil, the largest village in the Mizane Valley. You will store your main luggage here, before continuing on foot to the traditional mountain village of Aroumd with your daypack. If you don't feel comfortable with the walk, your leader can arrange a mule for you to ride instead. Perched on a rocky outcrop, the remote village of Aroumd offers stunning views across the High Atlas Mountains and a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazigh culture. Spend tonight in a family-run mountain home (gite) in Aroumd. Surrounded by the smell of woodstoves and bread, meet the host family and enjoy traditional hospitality and food.

Day 3: Taroudant

Location: Taroudant

Accommodation: Hotel L'arganier or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, dinner

This morning you'll have a bread cooking demonstration for breakfast and maybe an early morning walk around the village of Imlil. Transfer to Taroudant, passing through some Amazigh villages and stop in one of the oldest mosques in the High Altas where you'll learn about the Al Mouhad dynasty in which era this monument was built. Continue the drive across the high Altas mountains via the Tizi n Tast which gives you a great view of the largest plain of Sous. Arrive at your accommodation for the evening in the late afternoon in time for a swim in the pool and relax.

Included Activities:
-Armed - Bread cooking demonstration
-Tinmel - Tinmel Mosque

Day 4: Taroudant

Location: Taroudant

Accommodation: Hotel L'arganier or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

Today after breakfast, take a fun donkey ride through the picturesque oasis of Tiout. This is not your average city tour – by exploring the gorgeous oasis on the back of a donkey, you’ll be immersed in the local way of life and travel as the locals do. Kids and adults alike will delight in the unique experience of riding through the oasis and passing by friendly villagers along the way. The oasis is full of palm trees and streams of running water, giving an exotic atmosphere full of beautiful sights, smells and sounds. By hiring these donkeys and their guides, you'll be directly supporting the local community and ensuring that the animals are well taken care of, providing ample food and shelter. After your tour, join a local woman in her home for a traditional homemade lunch. From the mouth-watering fresh breads to the locally sourced ingredients (like succulent goat meat, a variety of veggies and flavourful olive and argan oil), every bite will take you on a journey of the senses. Not only will this authentic culinary experience leave you feeling full and happy, but it also supports the local community by providing income for the talented women in the village who prepare the meal with love and care. Your afternoon is free to relax or explore.

Included Activities:
-Taroudant – Local Lunch
-Taroudant – Donkey Ride

Day 5: Essaouira

Location: Essaouira

Accommodation: Hotel Souiri or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

After breakfast this morning, you'll travel up the coast to Sidi Kaouki. Mount a camel and take in the view as the waves crash along the shore line, taking in the awesome scenery as you plod along. This may well be one of the highlights of your trip. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach, then board the bus again and head to Essaouira. This delightful artists' town is a former Portuguese trading colony and was once home to sizeable British and Jewish populations. The town faces a group of rocky islands called the Mogador and is surrounded by an expanse of sandy beaches and dunes. It's still a busy fishing port, and its pretty harbour is filled with tiny colourful fishing boats which go out early every morning.

Included Activities:
-Sidi Kaouki - Camel Ride

Day 6: Essaouira

Location: Essaouira

Accommodation: Hotel Souiri or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast

Today is free for you to explore Essaouira as you please. Everything in the small centre is within walking distance, and the beach is nice and clean, great for strolling along. Why not wander the harbour and its adjacent fish markets where you can witness the daily auction. A fresh-cooked plate of the day's catch is highly recommended. Perhaps browse some of the many shops and art galleries where unique local pieces are on display. The town is becoming renowned for its burled Thuya wood, delicately formed and inlaid in tiny shops. The scent from the oils used to polish the richly coloured wood permeates the air and makes walking through the streets incredibly pleasant.

Day 7: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Accommodation: Hotel Gomassine or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast

Leaving Essaouira behind, journey inland to Marrakech. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour of the city centre, taking in the main sights on your way to the sprawling Djemaa el-Fna main square and souq. As is usual in a souq, individual trades and crafts are concentrated in one street or area, so the shoemakers are all next to each other, as are the jewellers, potters and weavers. This is the best place in Morocco to sharpen your bargaining skills, and you are almost certain to be tempted by some of the extraordinary variety of merchandise on display – perhaps a pair of traditional Moroccan slippers or some spices. The market almost has the atmosphere of a medieval fair. Fortune tellers and jugglers are among those who vie to entertain you. In the evening, wonderful smells waft by as food stalls cook up their local delicacies.

Included Activities:
-Marrakech - Medina walking tour

Day 8: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Meals Included: breaksfast

Your trip comes to an end this morning. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are free to depart the accommodation at any time.

Accommodation

  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
  • Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
  • GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
  • Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room.
  • Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that a triple room will often be a twin room with a rollaway bed or mattress on the floor. Where triple rooms aren’t available it will be at your discretion which of your family takes the single room.
  • Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room.
  • While we do our very best to ensure that family groups are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over the exact placement of rooms within a hotel. Please be understanding if we are unable to room your family in immediate proximity of one another.

Important Information

  • 1. Please note that these trips are for adults and children travelling together and there must be at least one child under 18 with you.
  • 2. Minimum age for children on this trip is 5 years old. Please note that anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian.
  • 3. A discount of 10% applies on this trip to children 17 years and under at time of travel.
  • 4. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Day 2 (Aroumd) where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
  • 5. While Wi-Fi is available in our hotels it is important to note that wi-fi works best in the hotel foyer and will be very slow in the rooms. An easier option may be to purchase a SIM card in Morocco to stay connected.
  • 6. Ramadan is an exciting time to travel through Morocco but there are also a few things to bear in mind. Meal times will be a lot later than you may be used to, in particular dinner. You will find restaurants will open at 7–7.30 pm in the evening for dinner. Which will mean your family may not be eating dinner until 8–8.30 pm. Likewise breakfast may not start until 7 am. As you travel through the countryside there will be limited small road side cafes to stop at. Your leader will pre-plan where to stop to ensure families have access to snacks and bathroom stops along the way. Morocco is a Muslim country therefore alcohol is not readily available, particularly during Ramadan.

  • Is this trip right for you

A camel trek along the Atlantic Ocean (Day 5) is a highlight of the trip for many travellers. But if you'd rather not ride a camel, you can always walk alongside the camels instead. It's a gentle, relaxing walk of about an hour each way.

The walk to the Berber homestay in the High Atlas Mountains can be hard in some places. Please talk to your leader if you would like to opt to travel on the back of a mule for this portion of the trip.

Summer temperatures in Morocco can get very hot. If you're travelling in the warmer months, be sure to wear layers, use sun protection and drink plenty of water. Nights can get quite cold, so warm clothes are essential.

There are some long travelling days on this trip as we cover a great deal of land. The road to the High Atlas Mountains is very windy, please take this into consideration if you or your child suffer from motion sickness.

Yes, if aged 5+ and accompanied by an adult

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

Over 50% of traveller travel solo with Intrepid. You can choose to share a room with another solo travelle of the same sex for no additional charge, or choose to pay a single supplement if you’d like your own room. Please request this when booking, and we will secure you a single supplement wherever possible. Please note, if you are booking a last-minute trip, it may be harder for us to secure a single room

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

13-Dec-2022

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Wonderful Croatian tour

02-Dec-2022

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

North Morocco Adventure

25-Oct-2021

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

21-Oct-2021

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.
