Tour Overview

Following in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, the Apostle Paul, Caesar, Brutus, poets, traders and crusader knights we'll take an epic journey through Northern Greece: along the "Via Egnatia".The Via Egnatia was a Roman road that ran from Rome to Istanbul, thus connecting the Eastern and the Western part of the holy Roman Empire. It crossed Illyricum, Macedonia, and Thrace, running through territory that is now part of modern Albania, North Macedonia, Greece, and European Turkey. You could say that it was both the continuation of the Silk Road, to the west and the Via Appia, to the east.As such this offbeat region of northern Greece offers not only spectacular scenery, it is also home to an extraordinarily rich cultural heritage, spectacular gastronomy – boasting flavours from Asia Minor, and Constantinople as well as Arab and Armenian influences – and a charming independent people. Away from the busy islands in the south, in the hidden north you’ll find a Greece full of charm, history and few other travellers.

Highlights

  • Visit vibrant Thessaloniki with its stunning early Christian and Byzantine monuments

  • Hike in Meteora, the oddly shaped sandstone peaks where monks settled from the 11th century onward (UNESCO World heritage)

  • Go wine tasting in Metsovo, a traditional Greek town perched on Mount Pindos in the Epirus region

  • Visit two of the most important archaeological sites of northern Greece - Pella and Vergina

  • Support conservation efforts by visiting the Arcturos brown bear shelter in Nymphaio

  • Marvel at the beauty of Lake Kerkini, a top bird watching spot

Firstly we will visit the bear sanctuary; a shelter for orphaned and rescued bears where we will enjoy a hours guided tour. Next we move on to Edessa, which holds a special place in the history of the Greek world as, according to some ancient sources, it was here that Caranus established the first capital of ancient Macedon. Later, under the Byzantine Empire, Edessa benefited from its strategic location, controlling the Via Egnatia as it enters the Pindus mountains, and the town became a centre of medieval Greek culture, famed for its strong walls and fortifications. From here we drive on to Lake Kerkini, having lunch overlooking the lake, before taking an afternoon boat tour on the lake to view some of the region's impressive and varied birdlife. First up today we step deep into Greek mythology by visiting one of the most impressive caves in Europe. According to Greek mythology, the Sphinx made her appearance at the Gorge of Aggites that traverses the Alistratis Cave area. Myth also mentions Pluto, the god of the Underworld, bringing the kidnapped Persephone, the daughter of goddess Demeter, to this natural ravine where a Gate to the Underworld existed. We will have a picnic lunch before visiting the famous archaeological UNESCO World Heritage site of Philippi. Founded in 356 BC by the Macedonian King Philip II, the city developed as a “small Rome” following the Battle of Philippi, in 42 BC and the succession of Rome. The vibrant Hellenistic city of Philip II, of which the walls and their gates, the theatre and the funerary temple are still to be seen, was supplemented with Roman public buildings such as the Forum and a monumental terrace with temples to its north. Following the visit of the Apostle Paul in 49-50 AD, the city became a centre of the Christian faith and the remains of its basilicas constitute an exceptional testimony to the early establishment of Christianity. And from here we head on to the sea at Kavala with the opportunity to have dinner (not included in tour price) at a restaurant overlooking the Aegean Sea.

It is great to delegate all the hard work of planning and carrying out a trip to new destinations. Wild Frontiers did an excellent job especially in this Covid era. All went to plan and thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the small group. Would definitely recommend and will travel with them again.

Wild Frontiers specialises in trips that are a bit out of the ordinary. On a recent group tour to Northern Greece we discovered an area not usually associated with Greek holidays. Think of stunning scenery, glorious mountain walks, beautiful lakes, small hillside villages, and whilst the archaeology may not be on the scale of Athens there is still plenty to admire, plus that intangible excitement of walking in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Philip 2nd of Macedon. Well done WF on a well thought out and thoroughly enjoyable trip with a great group of people.

Just returned from a fantastic group tour in northern Greece. Wild Frontiers put on a really enjoyable and surprising trip... think you know Greece? Well we discovered a side to it none of us knew. A great mix of culture, cuisine, hiking, nature, and sociability. Guide and tour leader were great, as was pre-trip support. The company is very Covid-aware and so I had no worries on that score. I’ve already booked a tour for next year!

I have travelled with Wild Frontiers 9 times in the last 7 years. I have always found their trips to be that little bit different than that offered by competitors with unusual itineraries, great accommodation, very professional guides and reliability. It was great that I was still able to go on an excellent trip this October during COVID and feel secure!
