@travellustlarry's Top Tips

"Buy a ticket and take a ride on the Tashkent Metro. You will be awed by the stunning Soviet-style architecture, each station has its own theme! The stations resemble art galleries or dance halls."

Did you know...

"Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia and during the Soviet Union era was the 4th largest City in the ex-USSR."

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"So many! Walking the wide streets and seeing the ex-Soviet brutalist statues, its beautiful Metro stations, local colourful markets and the Silk Road-style madrassas and mosques. "

Favourite time of year to visit Tashkent

"September/October is a great time to visit. You will escape the heat of the summer months and the bitter cold of the winter that occurs in Central Asia. "

Favourite time of year to visit Bukhara

"Late September/October is a great time of year to visit. The days are clearer and a lot cooler than in the summer months, plus the height of the tourist season is over, so it's just you and the locals!"

Did you know?

"Bukhara was a stop on the Silk Road trade route between east and west & was a medieval centre for Islamic theology & culture. It contains 100s of old mosques, bazaars, madrassas & caravanserais."

My Top Tip...

"If you're not on a tour, be sure to hire a taxi for the day and visit the stunning sites on the outskirts of the city. These include Ismail Samani Mausoleum, Sitorai-Mokhi-Khosa Palace & Chor Minor Madrasah."

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"Walking the streets of this city at sunset & dusk. Its madrassas, mosques & mausoleums are at their best in the glow of the evening light... the "Call to Prayer" makes it even more mesmerising!"

What do you love most about Samarkand?

"The architecture and Silk Road history of Samarkand is like nowhere else on the planet. A kaleidoscope of coloured tiles on the facades of the most amazing mausoleums & mosques makes it mythical. "

@travellustlarry's Top Tips

"If you're not on a guided tour, it would be worth hiring a local Uzbek driver for the day, the sites are spread across the city and the traffic is the worse in Uzbekistan, so having a local taxi driver will help as they know all the shortcuts!"

Favourite time of year to visit Samarkand

"Late September/October is ideal. The days are cooler, the skies are blue and the Autumn colours are beginning to appear. It's out of season tourist-wise, so you will have the sights to yourself."

What's my number 1 tip?

"Make sure you see Registan Square and Amir Temur mausoleum during the night, they are both lit up and shine like gems against the night sky! This was my highlight of Samarkand. "

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"Wander the alleyways at dusk of this ancient Silk Road city. You get a real sense of history and can feel the "ghosts" of the Silk Road traders and camel trains that stopped here during their journey."

Favourite time of year to visit Khiva

"September/October. You will have clear blue skies, the heat of being in the Khorezm desert has subsided and you will pretty much have the place yourself... just you and the locals - perfect."

Benefits of a tour guide for Khiva

"A tour guide will show you all the hidden places tucked away in the labyrinth of cobbled narrow alleyways and bazaars. You will also learn about its rich Silk Road history and all its stories."

Why is it called Khiva?!

"Khiva in English means "Sweet Water". The legend goes the Silk Road camel trains stopped here to take a drink from the natural spring in the desert. The word "Khiva" was spoken & the name stuck!"

Where is Khiva?

"The ancient city is located on the edge of the Khorezm Desert in Western Uzbekistan, on the Turkmenistan border. It's approximately a 1-hour flight to Urgench from the capital, Tashkent."
