Tour Overview

This is an ideal tour if you have previously travelled to the Top End but wish to see it from a botanical perspective. Get up close to the stunning national park landscapes of Kakadu and Litchfield. Admire waterfalls, billabongs adorned with waterlilies, jabiru, and plentiful birdlife. Visit Darwin’s private gardens and see their wealth of tropical plants. Learn about Indigenous culture, while seeing some of the world’s oldest rock art.

Day 1 : Darwin

Location: Darwin

Accommodation Name: Three Nights: Darwin, Double Tree by Hilton Esplanade or similar

You will be met in Darwin and transferred to your hotel. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner and meet your fellow travellers and Botanical Guide.

Day 2 : Jingili Water Gardens, Museum Of Art, Government House, George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

Location: Darwin

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

This morning, enjoy a Darwin sightseeing tour, which includes a visit the Jingili Water Gardens. We then browse the exhibits at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, home to internationally renowned artistic and cultural collections. Our travels then take us to the gardens at Government House (subject to availability), which overlooks Port Darwin. This afternoon, explore the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, noted for their collections of northern Australian and other tropical plant species.

Day 3 : Darwin Private Orchid Gardens, Berry Springs, Tropical Gardens And Mindil Beach Sunset Market

Location: Darwin

This morning we visit two private gardens in Darwin, including Jenny’s Orchid Garden, home to a vast collection of tropical orchid species. At Berry Springs this afternoon, swim in natural pools or walk through the monsoon forest and wetlands to see a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. More than 100,000 armed forces personnel were based in the area during World War II and remnants of this history can still be found here. Afterwards, we stop in at Anthill Gardens, the Northern Territory’s largest private tropical display garden. Tonight, we make our way to the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Market, where you will have time to browse the many stalls and purchase dinner at your leisure.

Day 4 : Kakadu National Park - Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Yellow Waters Billabong Cruise, Arnhem Land

Depart Darwin for Kakadu National Park. Visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre to see artefacts illustrating the stories of the land’s traditional owners. We next join the Yellow Water cruise along the world-famous Ngurrungurrudjba, or Yellow Water Billabong, where we see an abundance of native plants and birdlife. About one third of Australia’s total bird species are represented here in Kakadu National Park, including Jabirus and Brolgas. This afternoon, we see some of the world’s oldest and most spectacular rock art, along with incredible views across the Arnhem Land escarpment, at Nourlangie and Ubirr. This evening sees us staying within Kakadu overnight.

Day 5 : Kakadu National Park And Pine Creek Resort & Museum And Katherine

This morning you have the opportunity to take a scenic flight over Kakadu (at your own expense), before we make our way to Katherine, where the outback meets the tropics. Along the way, we enjoy lunch at Pine Creek Resort and visit the local museum, which is the oldest prefabricated corrugated iron building in Australia. Check into your beautiful hotel, the Cicada Lodge, your home for the next two nights.

Day 6 : Nitnit Dreaming 2 Gorge Tour And Jurassic Cycad Gardens

Location: Darwin

Join the NitNit Dreaming 2 Gorge tour this morning and take in the region’s breathtaking landscapes while learning about the plants, animals, culture, and Dreamtime Stories from your cultural guides. See the hanging gardens, a section of the gorge with an almost rainforest-like atmosphere. After lunch, visit Jurassic Cycad Gardens, home to around 200 species of cycads, a hardy evergreen cone-bearing plant. The property also has a range of palms, figs, ferns, cacti and other succulents across its five acres.

Day 7 : Litchfield National Park

Depart Katherine for Litchfield National Park, an ancient landscape shaped by its waterfalls, creeks and rainforest. Enjoy a picnic lunch while exploring this incredible natural wonder. This afternoon, we travel back to Darwin, where we celebrate our journey over a Farewell Dinner.

Day 8 : Darwin

Today, after breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport as our journey concludes.

    Travel Documents are sent to you 2-3 weeks prior to your departure. Certain information may be required to help finalise your booking.

  • What are Freedom of Choice Touring options?

    For APT tour programs, you may have the opportunity to select a Freedom of Choice Touring activity. These options are at no additional cost, and confirmed whilst on tour. The Tour Directors will guide you through all of the available options, and assist with booking these for those who are interested. Your brochure or our website will feature Freedom of Choice options for some tours - where applicable. Should time permit, passengers may be given the opportunity to experience a second option by purchasing that option.

  • Where do I join the tour?

    Most of our itineraries commence with a transfer from the airport, or a meet and greet on Day 1. There may be times recommended for you to fly, which your Sales consultant will provide you. If you choose to fly in a few days prior to your tour commencing and explore independently you will be advised of a time and location to meet the tour group. If booking pre tour accommodation with APT on an exclusive APT tour itinerary, you will receive both a transfer from the airport and on Day 1 of the tour to join your fellow guests. For Europe River cruises, the vessels are available for early boarding upon your arrival. Luggage can be stored at reception, and passengers have access to the main lounge. Cabin check in is available from 3pm.

  • How do I advise of Health/Mobility Requirements?

    Your Sales consultant will ask you for any requirements pertaining to your Health & Fitness during your booking process. A questionnaire may be required to be completed, which you will be advised.

  • How long has the tour company been trading?

    APT has been operating for over 95 years!

  • What are the luggage requirements?

    Each passenger is entitled to take one piece of luggage that does not exceed 160cm - length/height/width (63 inches), weight limit 20kgs (44 pounds). Additional fees may apply for additional luggage, and must be requested by time of final payment. Some safari / adventure tours may have further luggage restrictions where passengers need to pack down to a small soft duffle 10-15kg bag due to the smaller vehicles that are used whilst on tour, this includes Kimberley Wilderness Adventure, Outback Wilderness Adventures, Africa. Your Sales consultant can provide you with specific regulations.

  • Is tipping included on my APT tour?

    Tipping is included for all APT operated tours. There are a few activities whereby tipping is not included such as Tailor Made Holidays, Africa & South America's City Stays & Extensions, and the Northern Lights Adventure in North America.
