Tour Overview

The North East of England boasts an impressive artistic heritage, in galleries, museums and houses across County Durham, Northumberland and the city of Newcastle. A relaxing train journey takes us north from London, and we begin our tour at the gardens of Belsay Hall in Northumberland, uniquely set in the quarry used to provide stone for the house. Two more fine gardens follow, as we amble round the Alnwick Garden, an innovative contemporary project driven by the passion of the Duchess of Northumberland, and wander through the rock garden at Cragside as well as exploring the house itself, home to a fine collection of British art, furniture and ceramics. In Newcastle and neighbouring Gateshead we visit a trio of fine galleries while in Durham we see the fascinating Oriental Museum and the well-stocked Botanic Garden. We conclude at the impressive Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, where we can ‘test our eyes’ by feasting them on paintings, objets d’art and costume displays.

Highlights

  • The Alnwick Garden, firmly established as one of the North-East’s premier attractions

  • Three outstanding galleries in Newcastle and Gateshead

  • A close up look at the ‘Angel of the North’

  • The historic university and cathedral city of Durham

  • The magnificent Bowes Museum

Day 1

Location: London, Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County

Meals Included: Dinner

We depart mid-morning by train from London Kings Cross (regional rail connections, first-class up-grades and/or overnight accommodation in London before or after the tour available on request) to Newcastle, where on arrival, we will be met by our comfortable coach.
We then travel to Belsay Hall, a classical brown stone mansion, built in the 19th Century in Greek revival style to the design of its owner, Sir Charles Monck. The hall was built from rock carved from Belsay's very own quarry, which was later transformed into an exciting and dramatic garden – creepers twist up sheer rockfaces while, thanks to its own microclimate, rare trees grow in the meadows in the ravines.
We continue to our comfortable four-star accommodation at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County, conveniently situated on the banks of the River Wear within walking distance of the city centre. The hotel was developed from a series of Jacobean town houses once owned by the Bowes-Lyon family. All air-conditioned rooms are en-suite with telephone, TV, trouser press, minibar and tea/coffee-making facilities. The hotel has full leisure facilities including a swimming pool, sauna, steam room Jacuzzi and a gymnasium.

Day 2

Location: The Alnwick Garden, National Trust - Cragside

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

After breakfast we will travel to Alnwick for a visit to the Alnwick Garden, one of the world’s most ambitious new gardens. The Duchess of Northumberland’s vision for a forgotten plot is now a truly 21st century experience full of imagination, inspiration and fun. Designed by Jacques and Peter Wirtz, The Garden is a wonderful combination of spaces, themes, quirkiness and play. From the tranquillity of the Cherry Orchard, the excitement of the Grand Cascade and the mysteries of the Bamboo Labyrinth, to the Serpent Garden’s spell-binding water sculptures, the intrigue of the Poison Garden and one of the world’s largest tree houses – there is plenty to surprise and delight. The Garden is a space designed to be enjoyed by all your senses, with a collection of over 4,000 plant varieties to discover and thousands of seasonal blooms. Lunch is available here (not included).
We continue to Cragside House and Garden at Rothbury. Cragside was designed by Norman Shaw for the millionaire industrialist, inventor and philanthropist Lord Armstrong and was built in 1870. The very name makes one think of a Grimm’s fairy tale and the appearance of the house rising high above a rocky bluff overlooking the Debdon Valley has more than a touch of Wagner. This was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and it is crammed full of ingenious gadgets – most of them still working. It is also home to a notable and extensive collection of British art, furniture and ceramics. We will also have time to explore the grounds, which include a precipitous rock garden, one of the largest in Europe, which cascades down the slopes to a formal garden.

Day 3

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, Laing Art Gallery, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Shipley Art Gallery, Angel of the North

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

We depart this morning for the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, where we begin with a visit to the Laing Art Gallery, designed in Baroque style with Art Nouveau elements. The gallery collection contains paintings, watercolours and decorative historical objects, including Newcastle silver and enamelled glass. The gallery's collection of seminal paintings includes John Martin's dramatic The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as important works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt. There is also an extensive collection of 18th- and 19th-century watercolours and drawings, including work by J. M. W. Turner.
There is a complete contrast with our next visit, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, housed in a vast converted flour mill on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne. There is no permanent collection here, rather a frequently changing programme of exhibitions and events, so we don’t quite know what to expect but it is sure to be up-to-the-minute and thought-provoking.
Our final visit today takes us to the more traditional world of Dutch and Flemish painting, for which the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead is especially noted, although all the main European schools from the 16th to the 19th centuries are represented. Pride of place, however, is given to a painting depicting something closer to home: William C Irving’s Blaydon Races.
On the way back to the hotel we will take a closer look at Antony Gormley’s iconic sculpture Angel of the North, usually only glimpsed from the motorway or railway line. Up close one realises what a massive structure this is, built of concrete and steel to withstand the high winds of its hilltop location, with a height of 20 metres and a wingspan of 54 metres. The work faced considerable opposition during its design and construction phases, but is now widely recognised as an iconic example of public art and as a symbol of Gateshead and of the wider North East.

Day 4

Location: Oriental Museum, Botanic Garden, The Bowes Museum, Darlington, London

Meals Included: Breakfast

Before we leave our host city of Durham we visit two of its University-owned attractions. The first is the Oriental Museum, the only museum in the North of Britain devoted entirely to the art and archaeology of the Orient.  The museum boasts galleries devoted to China, Ancient Egypt, Japan, India and Tibet, the Islamic World and South East Asia and the collection includes some fascinating objects.
The next is the Botanic Garden, where we will see their plant collections from around the world, including China, Japan, North America, South Africa, New Zealand and Chile, as well as a woodland garden, alpine garden and bamboo grove. In the glasshouses you will find a collection of tropical rainforest plants, desert plants, and more familiar plants from the Mediterranean.
We continue to the Bowes Museum, situated on the edge of the town of Barnard Castle in a magnificent building designed (somewhat incongruously) in the French style of the First and Second Empires. The museum contains paintings by El Greco, Goya, Canaletto, Fragonard and Francois Boucher and the galleries hold a large collection of decorative art, ceramics, tapestries and textiles.
Following this, our final visit, we return to the railway station at nearby Darlington for our mid-afternoon train back to London Kings Cross, where the group will disperse or make onward connections.

  • What facilities do your coaches have?

Generally, our coaches have reclining seats, air-conditioning and toilets, however this cannot always be guaranteed as sometimes we have to use smaller vehicles. Toilets are recommended for emergency use only and regular comfort stops will be made throughout your holiday while travelling around.

  • Do I have to go on the included excursions?

Absolutely not. You are more than welcome to spend the day at your hotel or exploring independently should you wish. All we ask is that you inform your Tour Manager, so they are not left waiting for you to join the group.

  • Is there time to relax?

Although our itineraries may seem jam-packed, boasting access to some of the most exclusive sites across the UK and beyond, a Brightwater Holiday is just that: a holiday. Each trip will counter in more than enough free-time for you to explore places at your own leisure. And with most nights and the majority of meals being included in our tour prices, you can relax in hand-picked accommodation.

  • Do I need to be an expert?

Absolutely not! Although some of our tours are specifically focused on one thing, all you need to enjoy a Brightwater holiday is interest and bags of enthusiasm! Even on our most specialist tours, we take travellers from all skill levels, from experts to beginners.

Yes, we do – tailored to your exact requirements!

  • What’s the luggage allowance on your coaches?

There’s no fixed limit, but we generally say one large suitcase to go in the luggage compartment and a smaller bag that you can take onto the coach with you. For flight-inclusive holidays, we include a luggage allowance of at least 20kg.

  • Where are your departure points?

UK garden holidays generally depart from London, with additional pick-ups depending on the route of the coach, while holidays to Scotland depart from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth, with Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen sometimes included. All Eurostar holidays depart from London St. Pancras and flight-inclusive holidays depart from one or more of the main London airports, with regional flights .

  • What about the company that will be kept?

For single travellers, those with a companion or even those travelling in a larger group, you'll find that the signature of any Brightwater Holiday is the company. You won't ever be travelling with a group of strangers, instead, you'll find yourself surrounded by like-minded people with a strong shared interest who will soon become your firm friends.

  • What is a Brightwater Holiday?

Bursting with enthralling, educational and enlightening itineraries, a Brightwater Holiday, by its very nature, is packed with bucket-list-worthy destinations, behind the scenes passes and expert-led experiences. From creating bespoke quality garden and special interest tours for groups and individuals alike, we have made it our business to make our guests' travel dreams come true.

  • Why is there a single supplement?

Unfortunately, single room supplements are charges that are often imposed on us as a company when we book rooms for group holidays. However, most hotels do charge less for single occupancy, and we always pass this saving on to our solo travellers in the form of a modest single supplement.

  • How much are your optional excursions?

Prices start from as little as £20, but please contact our friendly team for questions about specific itineraries or excursions.

  • Can I pre-book my coach seats?

Yes, you can. In the case of front seats, guests with limited mobility are given priority. Please get in touch with our friendly team to discuss any requirements you may have.

  • How to get there? Easy!

With a Brightwater Holiday, the journey is just as important as the destination and we make getting you to your tour start point easy. From organising group flights and individual travel plans, to offering accessible local departure and pick-up points, we go out of our way to ensure that your journey is as convenient and hassle-free as it can be.

  • Do I need to have travel insurance?

Travel insurance is required for all overseas holidays and is also strongly recommended for UK holidays – primarily to protect yourself against cancellation charges should you be unable to travel.

Brightwater Holidays offers great value

28-Nov-2019

I would highly recommend Brightwater Holidays. It offers excellent service and value for money. This was my first tour as I normally arrange holidays myself, but this tour - which was to the gardens of Kent and Sussex - was a very pleasant change of pace.

The tour was well managed, the sites visited were all interesting and linked to the theme of the Picts and their place in history, the hotel was comfortable and the coach journeys were well paced. I have been with Brightwater before and will certainly travel with them again

23-Aug-2023

Noted a comment on taking coaches on A814 by a local person who didn't know the facts: When the A82 was blocked and the POLICE divert you onto that road you do as instructed not what a you know are tight roads but they only way to your destination as intructed by officials. We know this route is not suitable for large vehicles but the driver does as instructed by someone in authority.

07-Oct-2023

Recent (September 2023) Scottish holiday not so good. Various 'issues' to do with scheduling and organisation. I'm happy to report however that - after an interval - a letter expressing disappointment brought a full response - including a generous refund. So - with fingers slightly crossed - we'll be booking with Brightwater again in due course.

The recent tour in Northumberland...

30-Sep-2023

The recent tour in Northumberland turned out to be a shambles. Our South London driver took us to Newcastle, but no guide to meet us. Next day still no guide and the bus driver attempted to salvage the tour the best he could despite having no knowledge of the attractions. Fortunately one of the passengers Googled the tides for Holy Island. No holiday guide ever showed up. Coach and hotel were fine. Do these people only offer self guided tours? Take Shearings next time.

Been trying to get a reply from them for over a week. Booked Xmas tour, confirmation said pick up subject to numbers, they never said anything when booking and theyve been paid in full. Would not recommend!

I had heard this company...

20-Feb-2024

I had heard this company was a nightmare to deal with, but thought I'd give it a go. Signed up for a tour, then emailed them about how to pay off the balance. No response to 3 emails. I've never encountered a tour company that ignored questions on how to pay off a balance. Looked into other reviews and found many complaints about cancelled tours and refusals to refund deposits.

Two of your tour busses...

26-Jul-2021

Two of your tour busses used the A814 from Garelochhead to Arrochar on 24th July 2021. This route is not suitable for large vehicles and your drivers should not have taken the huge coaches that way. There are clear signs at both ends of the road indicating it is not suitable for HGV's. Our car had to go off into the soft verge to allow your coaches to pass. Please amend your routes to avoid this road in future.
