Tour Overview

Pressed for time? This express version of our eight-day Inca Trail trip cuts through the same amazing Andean landscapes, but with some challenging longer trekking days and pre-dawn starts. Our goal is the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New Wonders of the World, and we’ll wake early on our visiting day to beat the day trippers from Cuzco. Better yet, we’ll be led by some of the most experienced guides on the trail, who will help unravel the mysteries of the Incas.

Please note: A permit is required to walk the Inca Trail. These are strictly limited and highly sought after; therefore, we strongly recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

Highlights

  • Express Inca Trail trek: the fastest way to reach Machu Picchu by foot

  • Climb Inca steps to the top of Dead Woman's Pass (13,830ft/4,215m)

  • Overnight at Wiñay Wayna campsite on our third trekking day, closer to the Sun Gate for an early arrival to Machu Picchu

  • See Machu Picchu first thing in the morning and enjoy an expertly guided tour on the same day

  • Return to Cuzco directly after completing the Inca Trail to discover its fusion of Inca and colonial architecture

Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 : Start Cuzco; Free Time To Explore The Inca Capital

Location: Cuzco

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Royal Inka 1 Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: No Meals

Amid the altiplano hills, Cuzco, the imperial city of the Incas, was the geographic, cultural and political centre of a vast empire which, at its peak, stretched from the Ecuador-Colombia border to Santiago in Chile. After the Spanish conquistadors invaded the city, they built on top of the Inca structures, resulting in unique architecture, and a fusion of Spanish colonial and Inca styles. There will be a welcome briefing in the hotel lobby this afternoon/evening.

Remember to take it easy on arrival in Cuzco (and drink plenty of water) to help your body adjust to the altitude (11,155ft/3,400m).

Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 2 : Free Day; Optional Sacred Valley Excursion

Location: Sacred Valley, Cusco

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Royal Inka 1 Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: breakfast

Today is free, allowing you time to explore Cuzco, one of the most beautiful cities in South America. The Plaza de Armas is a fantastic spot for people-watching, and Qorikancha (the Sun Temple) in the Santo Domingo Church and monastery is worth a visit. The Mercado San Pedro is the place to try local produce and there are many handicraft markets to shop for souvenirs such as alpaca jumpers and scarves.

Outside the town are more Inca ruins, notably the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, where the Inca armies made their last stand against the conquistadors. Cuzco is also the gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Incas; if you wish to visit, your leader can help organise an excursion, including Pisac Market (optional).

If you fancy something more active, there is an array of other optional activities available from Cuzco, including paddleboarding on a lake, mountain biking, or a combination of via ferrata and zip-lining in the Sacred Valley.

In the evening, you will need to pack and weigh your duffel bag ready for the Inca Trail tomorrow – remember to keep your passport somewhere accessible for the Inca Trail checkpoint.

Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 3 : Start Inca Trail Trek From Km82; Walk Along Urubamba River, Climb To Huayllabamba

Location: Huayllabamba, Inca Trail

Accommodation: Camp

Accommodation Name: Huayllabamba Camp (full-service camping)

Meals Included: breakfastlunchdinner

This morning we transfer to the Sacred Vaelly and follow the road to the start of the Inca Trail at Piscacucho, commonly known as Km82.  After greeting our trekking crew, we show our passports at the checkpoint and begin the Inca Trail trek. Today’s route runs alongside the Vilcanota River, beneath the impressive snow-capped Nevado Veronica, passing through cactus gardens and corn fields until we reach the sprawling Inca ruins of Llactapata, where we continue up a side valley to camp near the village of Huayllabamba.

Accommodation: Full-service camping: Huayllabamba Camp

Day 4 : Cross Dead Woman's Pass, Then Descend To Pacaymayu

Location: Rio Pacaymayo

Accommodation: Camp

Accommodation Name: Pacaymayu Camp (full-service camping)

Meals Included: breakfastlunchdinner

A long climb takes us first through cloud forest to the meadows of Llulluchapampa, then over the Dead Woman's Pass (Warmihuañusca) – at 13,829ft (4,215m) the highest point on the trek. After quite a long, steep descent, we camp in the scenic valley of the Pacaymayu  River.

Accommodation: Full-service camping: Pacaymayu Camp

Day 5 : Over Runquracay Pass To The Ruins Of Sayacmarca And Phuyupatamarca; Onto Wiñay Wayna

Location: Puyupatamarca, Wiñay Wayna

Accommodation: Camp

Accommodation Name: Wiñay Wayna (full-service camping)

Meals Included: breakfastlunchdinner

Today is our longest trek, taking us over the Runquracay Pass (12,894ft/3,930m). From here, the Inca Trail becomes a clearly defined path of flat boulders. As we pass by the ruins of Sayacmarca, we suddenly enter cloud forest; at one point the trail passes through an Inca tunnel on the way past the ruins of Phuyupatamarca and ultimately descends to our final campsite at Wiñay Wayna.

Accommodation: Full-service camping: Wiñay Wayna

Day 6 : Tour Machu Picchu Via The Sun Gate; Back To Cuzco

Location: Sun Gate, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Cusco

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Royal Inka 1 Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: breakfast

Our final trek starts at 5;30am with flashlights in hand (or on heads) to reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) by 7.30am for our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Please note, Machu Picchu can be shrouded in mist in the early morning as the sun warms the cloud forest.

We then descend into the Machu Picchu complex – one of the architectural and engineering marvels of the ancient world and named as one of the New Wonders of the World. The Spaniards never found it; the Incas left no records of it, and so it remained an enigma, a city lost for centuries in the jungle until it was rediscovered in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham.

Our Machu Picchu visit will be an immersive, educational experience, with our expert guide showing us classic photo opportunities and unforgettable sites.

After the tour, we take the afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo (1hr 30min) and continue by private bus to Cuzco (1hr 30min).

Accommodation:  Koyllur Inn (or similar)

Day 7 : End Cuzco

Location: Cuzco

Meals Included: breakfast

You’ll begin your return journey home after breakfast. But if you’re not ready for the adventure to end, you can always book onto our Lake Titicaca extension, where you’ll explore the sky-high waters by boat, visit an indigenous community and explore the pre‐Inca site of Sillustani.

What's Included

  • Meals
    6 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners.

What's Not Included

  • Travel insurance

  • Visas or vaccinations

  • Single accommodation (available on request)

  • Sleeping bag (hire locally from US$20)

Food

All breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners are included.

Peruvian cuisine is loved for its flavors and originality; it’s well worth digging into the local delicacies. Among these are ceviche (seafood or fish marinated in lime juice), lomo saltado (a Peruvian take on a beef stir-fry), and various hearty soups including the delicious quinoa soup. Other dishes include roasted cuy (guinea pig) and alpaca steak. To drink, there’s pisco sour, the national beverage.

Drinking water is included throughout the holiday as the tap water in Peru is not safe to drink; boiled and filtered drinking water is provided on the trek; elsewhere your leader will buy large water containers from which you can refill your bottle.

Hotel breakfasts are normally simple buffet-style affairs, usually including bread/toast, preserves, cereal, sometimes eggs or cooked dishes, sometimes fruit, tea/coffee and fruit juice. Regrettably, we cannot guarantee that wheat-free or gluten-free products will be available for breakfast in all locations – if you have an intolerance you may wish to bring your own breakfast food.

Where lunch and dinner are not included in Cuzco, we’ll visit a variety of cafes and restaurants.

During the Inca Trail, hearty breakfasts are served and good-quality cooked lunches and dinners are provided. They usually consist of soup to start, a main course with meat/fish and some carbohydrates; followed by a dessert. Some snacks between meals are also provided. Tea/coffee is brought to your tent each morning and juice or hot drinks are provided with all meals during the trek.

Accommodation

Our Essential Inca Trail trip starts and ends in Cuzco, where we enjoy the comfort of our three-star hotel. Our Inca Trail is offered on a full-service camping basis with full porterage, meaning our camp staff put up and take down the tents for you, cook, and do all the camp chores. You need only carry your backpack for the day and enjoy your time on trek.

Cuzco: Royal Inka 1 Hotel (nights 1, 2 and 6)

The three-star Royal Inka 1 is conveniently located on Plaza Regocijo, two blocks from Cuzco’s central plaza, providing easy access to shops, cafes and restaurants. The 300-year-old Spanish-style hotel has an open courtyard, plus a restaurant and bar in which to dine and relax.

Inca Trail: Full-service camping (nights 3-5)

We sleep and dine in good-quality four-season tents. We also have a toilet tent set up both in camp and during lunch stops. Boiled and filtered drinking water is provided in the mornings, at lunch and dinner times so we can refill our water bottles. A bowl of warm water for washing is provided each morning and evening. We stay in official campsites where additional bathroom facilities are available.

Very helpful and prompt service

06-Jan-2023

Very helpful and prompt service. I called to check for an already booked trip and once we sorted this, the agent was ready to help me with another booking as well. He actually waited for me to book my flight tickets, answered all my questions, informed me of all my options. Exodus is a tour company I am using regularly due to the quality of their trips, ease of booking and helpfulness of their customer service team

Stunning walking. Walking the Amalfi Coast

04-Nov-2021

This trip takes you through the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean walking with a guide and also discovering the wonders of Pompeii and Vesuvius. The hotel had a nice feel as family run, spotless and comfortable rooms, we were well looked after for breakfasts and dinner each day, and the barmen fixed some mean cocktails for us.!

It's amazing what you can do in a week! Cycling the Dalmatian Coast.

08-Oct-2021

This holiday was extremely enjoyable. The itinerary is well planned and the route takes you to a variety of destinations. Not having been to Croatia before I didn't know there were so many beautiful small islands and I loved the ferry and catarmaran rides. The coastal route we took was dramatic and the World Heritage sites in Split and Dubrovnik very interesting and worth visiting. The Adriatic Sea was warm, blue and inviting, good for swimming even in October. The hotels we stayed in varied in size from medium to large. I particularly liked the one just outside Dubrovnik as I had a sea view. Tourists were plentiful in Split and Dubrovnik but in the other places we stayed there was an end of season feel and it was quiet on the roads and in the resorts. The food was good and our guide was always able to recommend a nice restaurant for our evening meal. The weather in October was good for cycling - not hot, partly cloudy most days and one day it rained!

Fabulous company and trip

06-Jan-2023

We went overland from Cape Town to Zimbabwe through Botswana and Namibia. What a fantastic trip. Our first time with Exodus although we have travelled extensively around the world. We would highly recommend this company for such a brilliant trip - we got everything and more all at a good price. Thanks to everyone involved. We are looking at our next trip!

I went cycling in Albania with exodus as my first holiday with them. Such a well organised and wonderful experience where I met multiple fellow travellers who have been advocates of them for many years. You can't argue with happy repeat customers and I'm planning my next adventure with them soon

I'v just come back from...

17-Jul-2022

I'v just come back from an amazing Wildlife & Wilderness trip in Botswana and I highly recommend Exodus Travels. Our guide Brian, was extremely knowledgeable on both the wildlife and history of Botswana and neighbouring countries. The other three staff, Abbis, Chief & Mr T, who accompanied us through out our 2 week trip, put in the hard work and made sure our camp was always prepared and that we we're well fed and looked after. The tour took us to some beautiful places and we saw some amazing wildlife, and on several occasions this was due to Brian's knowledge of the area and wildlife behaviour. Exodus have been very quick to respond to any queries I had, and the whole experience ran smoothly. I was also pleased to hear that during lockdown they provided staff with food packages 👍. I'd normally go on self organised trips, however, with this trip, the tour and guide Brian took us to places not possible otherwise and showed us things that we would'v missed out on. All of which were the highlights of the tour.

17-May-2023

I've done 8 trips in the last 14 years with Exodus, and have been rewarded with a 10% discount on all future bookings. I feel very confident that I'll receive pleasant, efficient service, and have the unusual holiday experience that I'm looking for each time. I've trekked to the top of snow-capped peaks, wild-camped in the desert, seen amazing spectacles of nature, visited 4 capital cities in a week, and learned about local culture and experienced local hospitality in a way that I simply wouldn't on a conventional holiday. The quality of the accommodation and guides can vary, but this is mainly down to cultural differences and things that Exodus can't control. I've only ever complained once, my complaint was taken seriously, and I was sent a discount voucher - you can't say fairer than that. I remain a loyal customer.

Food came quickly. Staff very friendly and polite . However the chef or person preparing the food did not seem to read the menu! If it says a meal should come with vegetables, you should not have to ask for them. They served shepherds pie with garlic bread! The munchies ice cream sundae said it should come in a glass with a flake but came in a little bowl with just a few munchies! When asking the staff were happy to replace and correct but customer should get what they order and what menu says first time round!!

If you like to be mistreated Exodus is perfect for you. If you enjoy terrible choices for hotels and pseudo restaurants Exodus is perfect for you. Careless about their clients and loveless about their propositions. Exodus has been a dissatisfaction and disappointment about every dealing i and my group have had with him. Especially a man called Simone who just cares about the money he can get from you couldn’t care less about service.
