Tour Overview
The Gower Peninsula was the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it was designated as such in 1956 and ranges from the south coast's limestone scenery at Worms Head and Oxwich Bay to the salt-marshes and dune systems in the north. Our twin-centre walking holiday starts in Mumbles, a headland on the western edge of Swansea Bay. The walks take you along the coast path past pretty bays and coves towards the high cliffs of Three Cliffs Bay where you may spot lizards. You'll pass the ruins of the Norman Pennard Castle and enter Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve where over 600 species of plant have been identified, you may also spot reed warblers, sedge warblers and bitterns. Continue along the cliff tops above Rhossili beach with the possibility of crossing the rocky causeway to the tidal island of Worms Head, where grey seals can be seen lazing on the rocks below. Look out for orchids and dune gentians in Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve and pintails and golden plovers in Llanrhidian Marsh. Towards the end of your route you can visit Weobley Castle, a 14th Century fortified manor house.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 : Arrive In Mumbles
Location: Mumbles
Meals Included: No Meals
Arrive in Mumbles, your base for the first three nights.
Day 2 : Mumbles To Southgate
Location: Southgate
Meals Included: Breakfast
Leave behind the seaside town bustle of Mumbles and head out along the coast path. Enjoy the pretty bays and coves along the path as you head toward Pwlldu Head. From here the path heads slightly inland toward a small hamlet and the coastal road that takes you into Southgate, where you'll be collected by taxi for your transfer back to Mumbles.
Day 3 : Southgate To Port Eynon
Location: Port Eynon
Meals Included: Breakfast
A transfer takes you back to where you left off yesterday to continue along the path towards the high cliffs of Three Cliffs Bay. Keep your eyes peeled for lizards basking in the sun as you pass through here. If the tide is out there is an optional short cut across the estuary, otherwise take the longer route around, passing the Norman ruins of Pennard Castle. Continue on through Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve, rich with wildlife. Leave the vast sandy beach behind as you climb up into Oxwich Woods. As you leave the woods the path flattens out to follow the headland to the village of Port Eynon.
Day 4 : Port Eynon To Llangennith
Location: Llangennith
Meals Included: Breakfast
Say goodbye to Mumbles as you're transferred to Port Eynon to pick up the coastal path where you left off yesterday. If the tide is out, explore the ruins of Salt House before heading out along the cliff tops towards Rhossili. Here you'll find the spectacular Worm's Head promontory jutting out into the sea. Careful timing with the tides does allow access to Worm's Head itself if you're prepared for a rocky scramble but, if you plan to do this, allow plenty of time to get back before the incoming tide. Continue on the path, high above the 3 mile expanse of the golden sands of Rhossili Beach, before turning inland for the final stretch to Llangennith.
Day 5 : Llangennith To Llanrhidian
Location: Llanrhidian
Meals Included: Breakfast
Walking from the door of your accommodation this morning, rejoin the coastal path and continue toward the rare flora of Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve. As you pass through the Llanrhidian Marsh SSSI, home to Oystercatcher and Turnstone, it's worth a visit to Weobley Castle, a 14th Century fortified manor house. Complete your walk of the Gower coastal path at Llanrhidian village, from where you'll be transferred back to Llangennith for your final night.
Day 6 : Leave Llangennith
Location: Llangennith
Meals Included: Breakfast
Depart Llangennith after breakfast.
