Tour Overview

Mt Toubkal, the highest peak in north Africa, stands 4167m above sea level and commands superb views of the High Atlas Mountains. Our trek passes through impressive landscapes on well-defined paths and is, surprisingly, not too strenuous. As we climb higher, the paths do become steeper but the gain in altitude awards dramatic views towards Marrakech and the spectacular Anti-Atlas mountains. Passing through remote villages and terraced fields we gain an insight into the life of the friendly Berber people and finish with free time in the colourful imperial city of Marrakech.

Highlights

  • Magnificent panoramic views from the summit of Mt Toubkal

  • Optional ascent of Mt Ouanakrim (4089m)

  • 2 leaders for all walking days for groups of 11 or more

  • Acclimatisation walks amid beautiful remote Berber villages

  • Time to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of Marrakech

  • A non-technical ascent of the highest mountain in North Africa - Toubkal (4167m)

Accommodation

On this trip, we spend two nights in a hotel in Marrakech, four nights camping and one night in a gite. Below are the accommodations we typically use:

Marrakech: Hotel Gomassine (nights 1 and 7)

Our adventure begins and ends at Hotel Gomassine in the Guéliz neighbourhood of Marrakech. The hotel itself has a small pool with sun loungers, plus there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. If, upon arrival, you need to pick up anything for the days ahead, the Carre Eden mall is a five-minute walk away, where you'll find international shops and a Carrefour Gourmet supermarket.

Camping: Nights 2-5

Our four camping nights are a truly wild experience, as we sleep under the Moroccan sky, cradled by the High Atlas Mountains. Our first two nights are spent wild camping, firstly in the Azaden Valley on the outskirts of a small village (night 2), then at L'Azib N-Tzikarte (night 3). Our final two nights (nights 4 and 5) are at Mount Toubkal Base Camp, where we normally camp within walking distance of a mountain refuge where (for a small fee) you can shower (though the water is often cold).

To make the experience more comfortable, the camp team put up a toilet tent at our campsites – it’s basic but does the job. All the camping is full service, which means you don't need to put up your tent or do the camp chores. Sleeping mats are provided.

Aroumd: Hotel Aremd (night 6)

One night is spent in a gite (guesthouse) in Aroumd. This is twin-share with shared facilities, including hot showers and a lovely terrace overlooking the mountains.

Worth knowing

Hotel Aremd is more akin to a mountain refuge with a dorm room. Single supplements are not available for these nights.

There may be times when the weather forces us to use a gite instead of camping at Mount Toubkal Base Camp.

Single supplement is not available in the Gite.

Food

All breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners included.

Moroccan food is, generally speaking, excellent though not particularly
varied.

Breakfasts usually consist of porridge, bread and jam with coffee or
tea. Main meals will often be in the form of tajines of meat and vegetables
with a great mix of herbs and spices and light fluffy cous cous. Salads will
often comprise of both cooked and raw vegetables including tomatoes, smoked
peppers and aubergine. Seafood is also popular as are dried fruits and
pastries.

When eating out, meals are reasonably priced - kebab and bread cost only
about £4 (approx. US$6.50). In main towns it is possible to find very good
French and Moroccan restaurants where a meal with wine will cost anything
from £20 (approx. US$30) upwards. Generally dinner is likely to cost between
£5-10 (approx. US$8-15) depending on what you drink. £15 (approx. US$25) a
day for food should be sufficient. Local beers, wines and soft drinks are
available at very reasonable prices but you can pay UK prices or more for
imported alcohol. Your leader can help recommend restaurants each evening.

Vegetarians can be catered for but there is a fairly limited choice of cous
cous and tajine or omelettes. This is particularly the case during the more
rural or trekking sections of the trip.

If you have any special dietary requirements you should inform the Exodus
Office prior to the trip. If you have a specific medical/dietary need (i.e.
coeliac or vegan) you may find it helpful to bring some items of food with
you from home.

We advise you buy your own water purification tablets in the UK and take them
with you. Bottled water can be purchased throughout the trip, but as
recycling is not fully established in Morocco plastic bottles are an
increasing waste problem.

We encourage you to bring water bottles and a means of purifying, filtering
or sterilising water (see packing section) in order to be able to drink cool
water from mountain streams. Bottles of water are available but we strongly
discourage buying these as it contributes to plastic waste.

Fantastic Experience with a Wonderful Group

I was not really sure what to expect from the trip

I was not really sure what to expect from the trip having not experienced a trekking holiday before but this turned out to be a truly enjoyable trip. The group was sixteen people and a complete mix of backgrounds and ages which made for entertaining conversation over the week we had together. Unseasonal cold weather meant a last minute change to the planned itinerary which was unfortunate but entirely unavoidable and the weather prevented us scaling the second (optional) 4000m peak but the alternative local Hammam experience was a great substitute for our tired bodies.

I have just come back from my trip in the Atlas mountains and it has been a really extraordinary experience. Not only were the landscapes stunning throughout our journey but the view at the top of Toubkal was amazing! The simple and happy life of the Berber people is truly inspirational and I hope to carry that forward with me in my day-to-day life.

A beautiful and fairly easy walk through some surprisingly diverse scenery, this trip is an excellent introduction to the Atlas mountains. I found the pace set to be generally perfect and there was always something interesting to look at.

Overall a great trip, the Atlas mountains were amazing. Views from top of Toubkal were stunning, and we had the summit to ourselves. The terrain was harder than I thought it might be, having already trekked up Kilimanjaro, but it was do-able. The team including the mule drivers worked really hard and deserve to be paid more. June was a good time to go. Hot but not unbearable, until we returned to Marrakesh to 47 degrees! Was only 32 when we left. Shame there wasn't more time alone in Marrakesh to bargain hunt in the souks. Would have happily forgone the guided tour of Marrakesh if I had known.
