Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1: Reykjavik (Arrival)
Welcome to Iceland! Upon arrival, pick up your rental car a the airport and drive towards Reykjavík to explore the largest municipality in Iceland. Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavik stands today. The town got its name “Smokey Bay” after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area made such a deep impression on the first settlers. Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital.
Approximate distance: ca50km /30 miles
Overnight in Reykjavík or Hveragerdi
Important note: From May – September, drive down the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the charming village of Hveragerdi, where you will spend the night. This village is one of the few sites in the world that is located directly on top of a geothermal, and because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from the nearby springs, it is often referred to as the “flower village.” There are plenty of outdoor and wellness activities to enjoy here, and several restaurants with a unique local focus.
Approximate distance: ca100km /62 miles
Overnight in Reykjavík or Hveragerdi
Day 2: Reykjavik/Hveragerdi – Vik (B/-/-)
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Today you will drive along with the scenic shore and breathtaking area of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. This is the volcano whose massive 2010 eruption caused air traffic around the world to be cancelled. Later, drive to the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss before continuing to Dyrholaey* and exploring the black sand beaches of the South Shore. Continue your journey to the village of Vik.
*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in the spring, approximately from mid-May to June 25th
Overnight in Vik
Day 3: Vik – Thjorsardalur – Gullfoss – Geysir (B/-/-)
After a delicious breakfast, set out to explore the Thjorsardalur Valley and its everchanging landscapes of birch woods, sandy lava fields, majestic rivers, and beautiful waterfalls. You will also see the impressive and beautiful Mount Hekla Volcano towering over the region. In the summer, you can visit the excavated site of a Viking age farm that was covered by lava from one of Heklas eruptions. A replica will show you how the longhouse looked (admission not included). Continue to the incredible sites of the Gullfoss Waterfall and the Geyser Hot Spring area. Gullfoss is considered by many visitors to be Icelands most beautiful waterfall. Geyser is an active geothermal field with many bubbling steam vents and spouting hot springs – you have to see the famous Strokkur Geyser. If you enjoy history, we suggest you visit Laugarvatnshellir, a cave cleverly converted into a home for two Icelandic families in the early 20th century. The cave has been restored to show how it looked in those days. A great way to relax after an exciting day is to either visit the Fontana Steam Baths in Laugarvatn or the Secret Lagoon in Fludir. Both places are a part of the areas history and are popular destinations for both Icelanders and visitors.
Overnight in the Golden Circle Area
Day 4: Geysir – Thingvellir – Borgarfjordur – Reykjavir (B/-/-)
In the morning you will visit Thingvellir National Park, the site of the ancient Icelandic Viking Parliament and a true jewel of nature. Here, you can see the meeting point between the North American and European continents. Many important historical events have taken place here. Several walking trails and hiking trails will take visitors to historical points of interest. From there, either travel along the scenic Hvalfjordur Fjord or the vast Kaldidalur wilderness track (Open June-August, 4WD needed). Your journey will take you to the beautiful Borgarfjordur Region and Reykholt, home to the colorful 13th-century chieftain and the Saga author Snorri Sturluson. While you are in the area, you might stop by the Sturlureykir Visiting Horse Farm, where you can head on a guided tour around the farm, meet friendly Icelandic horses, and try homemade baked treats in the farms cafe. Within the area lies two scenic, impressive waterfalls. Hraunfossar, the Lava Falls, appear as though glacial water is bursting through the lava formations. The nearby Barnafoss Falls boasts brilliantly blue waters. Visit Deildartunguhver, the most powerful and fastest hot spring in Europe. You cant bathe in these springs, but the nearby Krauma natural geothermal baths use water from Deildartunguhver combined with cool mountain springs to create the ideal temperature for relaxation. Head to Reykjavik in the afternoon, where you will spend your last night in Iceland.
